Commerical Media and it's Audience

When I was discussing the corporate giants including brands such as Nike and The North Face, it reminded me of a specific example of a certain advertising and the genius and ingenuity put into it to have a substantial effect on its audience worldwide. People familiar with the game of soccer, or futbol as referred to in other countries, know its effect on an individual from adulthood all over the world. Nike produced a commercial around World Cup time while every family was glued onto the television. The commercial put every viewer in a game-like situation, playing among the best players out there. I could go on about the commercial and its effect among its audience; stirring young kids to go outside and kick the ball around on a yard, street, or dirt road, and adults to reach for that team that have loved since they were little boys as well. But you tell me... Why would a child want any other brand after viewing a short commercial such as this?

I have many friends who love the outdoors, including fishing, campling, hunting, rafting etc. Me, on the other hand, prefer to be inside most of the time, sleeping on a elevated bed, and in the comfort of a recliner. No doubt there is a beauty, peacefullness, and even economic benefit for living in a small shack out in the woods. Now, there are even options for individuals like me, who prefer the fire place instead of the fire pit. Individuals continue to post their unique creations on the Tiny House Swoon website, to inspire others to let loose a little, and get out and enjoy yourself.

Let's enjoy ourselves, shall we?

In graduating with a degree in History, it is easy to see why I am far from familiar with the common outlets of social media, the always changing technology for research, and the questioning of our past father's ideologies. I would frequently dive into books, master's theses, and pamphlets dating back to 1865, looking for answers to questions no primary source could answer from experience. I've come to realize I simply cannot avoid it anymore, social media and the ever-changing technology discovered everyday, that is. In trying to keep up with current events, I have come to realize that the small business, unique little shop on the corner will no longer survive in this day and age.

I recently read about a shoe company that I enjoyed, called "Simple Shoes," who was bought out by a larger shoe company. Details mirror the exact changes and takeovers we see everyday in the media and newspapers, larger companies simply swallowing up smaller ones due to the major amount of dollars a corporation has. No doubt social media has a major influence on this matter, because with the price of worth-while advertisement being as high as it is, the small companies have no chance to get their name out their to buyers. Companies like Nike, Polo, and North Face, and food services like McDonald's, Little Cesar's, and Fazoli's, whose cheap meals overshadow the old Italian food houses and pizza places that would be considered gems in a smaller community. Without understanding social media and properly applying a working plan on its behalf, small business will continue to diminish until it ultimately disappears.
